?? This Week at Mighty Mossy! ??

It has been another busy and exciting week at Mighty Mossy! Here’s a look at what we have been getting up to across Acorn and Oak Class. 🌿

🌱 Acorn Class

🌍 Geography: We have been creating our own ‘messy maps’, using directional language to describe journeys from one continent to another. We have also been identifying and describing the oceans we would travel through on our journeys. 🗺️🌊

📚 English: We have been exploring non-fiction books and identifying their key features. We have been learning about the difference between fact and fiction and using glossaries to find the meanings of new words.

🎨 Art: We have been using everyday objects to create repeating patterns, experimenting with shape, arrangement and repetition.

🎵 Music: We have been listening carefully to songs played on the guitar and seeing if we can identify them just from what we hear! 🎸

🌈 Fun and learning outdoors: We have enjoyed using chalk to create pictures and practise writing numbers, making delicious-looking soup and pies in the mud kitchen, and playing music while taking to the stage for our very own performances! 🎨🥧🎶

🏛️ Oak Class

📖 English: We have been reading and performing our Rockin’ Romans playscript, developing our expression and performance skills. Next week, we will use what we have learned to write our own playscripts based on the Dum Spiro cartoon.

🏺 History: We have been learning about the incredible success of Roman aqueducts and discovering how the Romans transported water across their vast empire.

🤸 PE: We have been working hard to perfect our balances, developing our control, coordination and technique.

💻 Computing: We have been using iMovie to record and create our own scripts, developing our digital editing and presentation skills.

What a fantastic week of learning, creativity and fun! Well done, Mighty Mossy! 💚🌿

Year 1 Reading Books

One of our key aims is to support and guide children throughout their reading journey and, most importantly, to develop a lifelong love of reading. To help children become fluent and confident readers, phonics teaching is at the heart of our approach. From Monday, Year 1 children will bring home a phonics book that is closely matched to the phonics phase they are currently working on. They will no longer bring home a 'Home Reader'. The phonics book will contain sounds and words that your child has already been taught and is familiar with, allowing them to practise their skills and build confidence. We ask that you read this book together for around 10 minutes each evening and record details of your reading in your child’s reading record. An adult in school will change your child’s phonics book twice a week; your class teacher will let you know which days this will happen. Alongside their phonics book, children in Key Stage 1 will also have the opportunity to visit the school library each week and choose a book to bring home. This library book is an opportunity to share stories, enjoy books together and develop a genuine love of reading, so please feel free to read it to your child, talk about the pictures and characters, and enjoy it together. Thank you for your continued support in helping us nurture confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers.

Parent Governor Vacancy

The role of the governing board

The school’s governing board is responsible for providing confident and strategic leadership, and creating robust accountability, oversight and assurance for the school’s educational and financial performance.
The board is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

The role of a parent governor

As a parent governor, you’ll work with the board to make sure it effectively carries out the duties referred to above. You’ll also play a vital role in bringing a parental perspective to the governing board, but you’re not there to speak ‘on behalf’ of the parent body.

To be a parent governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children
  • Good interpersonal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • The specific skills required to make sure the governing board delivers effective governance

Expectations of governors

Make sure candidates fully understand what is expected of them in their role by outlining your expectations, including:

  • Attendance at meetings
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Committing to training
  • Visiting the school
  • Their term of office

How to apply

If you’re interested in applying for the role, please have a chat with Antonella. If we receive more applications than there are vacancies, a secret ballot will be carried out. We will inform you closer to the time if we have to do this.

Online Learning Logins and Passwords

Online learning resources can be a valuable way to support and extend the learning that takes place in school. Many of the resources we use link closely with and complement the work happening in the classroom, while also giving parents the opportunity to be involved in and support their child’s learning at home. Logins for Seesaw, Timetables Rockstars and EdShed are now stuck inside your child’s reading record. These stickers will replace last year’s booklets, so please keep the reading record somewhere safe and accessible.

 Forest Friday & Eco-Schools Update

We are very excited to be restarting our Eco-Schools journey and continuing to look after and improve our school environment.

As part of our first Forest Friday activity, we are going to be making bug hotels to provide a safe and welcoming habitat for insects and other minibeasts around our school grounds.

We would love to invite parents and carers to come along and help us build our bug hotels on Friday 16th October at 2pm.

Our reserve date, should the weather be unsuitable, will be Friday 23rd October at 2pm.

Before we begin building our larger bug hotels, we will be making some mini bug hotels using plant pots.

If you are able to help, we would be very grateful for donations of medium-sized plastic plant pots for the children to use. ??

Thank you for your support — we are really looking forward to working together to make our school a fantastic place for both children and wildlife!

Young Voices - Year 4, 5 and 6

Alongside our friends at St. George's, we are delighted to be offering children the opportunity to take part in our Young Voices Choir again this year. Next half term the choir will meet every Thursday after school until 4:30pm, beginning on Thursday, 5th November 2026. The highlight of the choir experience will be performing as part of the Young Voices concert on Wednesday 27th January 2027 at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to perform alongside thousands of other young singers in what promises to be a memorable experience. Concert tickets will be available to purchase closer to the event. Places in the choir are limited, so please only sign your child up if they are keen to take part and are able to make the weekly Thursday rehearsals. Regular attendance is important as the children will be learning songs, choreography and preparing together for the concert.

If your child would like to be part of the Young Voices Choir, please complete the form, sent via Class Dojo,  by WEDNESDAY, 7th OCTOBER

Break the Rules Day – Friday, 23rd October

As Halloween falls during the October half term again this year, we won’t be holding our usual party. Instead, to add a little fun and raise funds for school, we’ll be hosting a “Break the Rules Day” on Friday, 23rd October.

On this special day, pupils will have the chance to bend the rules – all for a good cause! Each rule broken will cost £1, with a maximum of £5 per child.

Some ideas include:

· Wearing trainers instead of school shoes – £1

· Wearing hair down instead of tied up – £1

· Bringing a treat for playtime instead of fruit – £1

· Wearing a Halloween costume – £1

It’s a chance for the children to get creative, enjoy a day of mischief and help raise money at the same time. We can’t wait to see their imaginative rule-breaking!
