?? This Week at Mighty Mossy! ??

Another fantastic week of learning, creativity and outdoor adventures at Mighty Mossy! 🌿 Here’s what Acorn and Oak Class have been up to.

🌱 Acorn Class

🦕 English: We have become Stegosaurus experts! After learning lots of fascinating facts about these incredible dinosaurs, we have started writing our own non-chronological reports.

🔢 Maths: We have been working hard on addition and subtraction, using numbers up to 20 and 100. Our part-whole models have been helping us to understand numbers and solve calculations.

🦁 Science: We have been learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We put our knowledge to the test by grouping animals according to what they eat.

🌍 Geography: We have been exploring famous landmarks around the world. We wrote postcards from famous landmarks, imagining we were visiting them, while our Reception children got creative in the construction area by building their own landmarks. 🏰

🏛️ Oak Class

📖 English: We have completed our modelled write, transforming the cartoon Dum Spiro into a playscript. We have focused on using atmospheric vocabulary to bring our setting descriptions to life and including adverbial phrases to add detail to our writing.

💧 Science: We had lots of fun investigating evaporation! We used wet socks and a radiator to explore what happens to water as it dries. A practical investigation that certainly got us thinking!

🧵 DT: Our Roman pouches are nearly finished! We have been developing our sewing skills and showing plenty of patience and perseverance with our creations.

📐 Maths: Year 5 have been enjoying learning how to use protractors to measure angles accurately. Great mathematical work!

🌳 Forest Friday – A Special Visit!

This week’s Forest Friday was extra special as we welcomed our friends from Pingawings Nursery! 🐧 The children buddied up and worked together to make their very own mini bug hotels using plant pots, ready to take home.

It was wonderful to see everyone working together, sharing ideas and exploring nature. Our little bug hotels will hopefully provide a cosy home for some garden minibeasts! 🐞🐜

Well done to everyone for another brilliant week of learning and discovery. Have a lovely weekend, Mighty Mossy families! 💚🌿

Spelling help!

Spelling plays a vital role in children’s reading, writing and overall confidence, and as a school we are continuing to boost its profile. We would like to remind parents about Spelling Shed, which is an excellent online tool to support spelling practice at home. Each week, class teachers upload the children’s spellings to Spelling Shed, where pupils can practise them through fun, game-based activities. We recommend that children complete at least three games each week. To celebrate effort and success, the top  child in eaach class on Spelling Shed will receive a certificate in celebration assemby each week. Please encourage your child to make regular use of this valuable resource.

Alongside Spelling Shed, we also use ‘sticky word’ strategies to help children remember spelling rules and conventions. These strategies are taught regularly in school and should be familiar to the children. They are also very effective for home practice.

  • Sticky Note Spelling
  • Colourful Words
  • Triangle Words
  • Read, Turn, Write, Check

Please find attached a more detailed explanation of how each strategy works.

Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop strong spelling skills.

A gentle nudge to check your SCO Pay balances…

As we approach half term, please could all families take a moment to check their balances for Breakfast Club, Late Stay, and School Dinners on SCO Pay. Even small outstanding amounts soon build up, and settling these now helps us keep things running smoothly for everyone. Thank you, as always, for your support and cooperation — it really does make a difference.

Sadly, due to an increasing number of people not paying their debts off, any debts that are not cleared before the end of term will result in your place at Breakfast Club and Late Stay being revoked. This isn't what we want to do but is necessary.

 Forest Friday & Eco-Schools Update

We would love to invite parents and carers to come along and help us build our bug hotels on Friday 16th October at 2pm.

Our reserve date, should the weather be unsuitable, will be Friday 23rd October at 2pm.

Before we begin building our larger bug hotels, we will be making some mini bug hotels using plant pots.

If you are able to help, we would be very grateful for donations of medium-sized plastic plant pots for the children to use. ??

Thank you for your support — we are really looking forward to working together to make our school a fantastic place for both children and wildlife!

Class Call-In – Thursday 15th October, 3:30pm

Thursday is Class Call-In — a brilliant opportunity for you to step into your child’s world and see school through their eyes. From coat pegs to reading corners, pencil pots to prayer spaces, children will be leading the way as they proudly walk you through their classrooms, explain their daily routines, and share their favourite learning spaces.

There’s no need to book a time or make an appointment — just come along, take a wander, and enjoy hearing all about “a day in the life” at Mossy Lea from the real experts… your children!
