This Week at Mighty Mossy!

It’s been another busy week of learning, exploring and creating at Mighty Mossy! Here’s a little peek at what our Acorn and Oak classes have been getting up to…

Acorn Class Highlights

English: We’ve been bringing our story Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs to life through Talk for Writing. We’ve had lots of fun exploring the characters, using our imaginations and retelling the story.

Computing: We’ve started learning all about algorithms and had a go at creating instructions to make a plane take off!

Outdoor Learning: We’ve made the most of our outdoor area – enjoying books in the reading shed, cooking up delicious creations in the mud kitchen and building in our construction area. We’ve also been exploring lots of different instruments and creating our own music using our fantastic music wall!

Art: Our artists have been busy creating colourful dinosaur collages, experimenting with a range of different materials and textures.

Oak Class Highlights

English: A mysterious picture of a wolf with two babies sparked lots of curiosity and questions! We discovered that it was linked to the famous Roman legend of Romulus and Remus. We made predictions before reading the story and couldn’t wait to find out what happened!

Science: We’ve been getting hands on with our investigation into solids, liquids and gases, exploring their different properties and finding out more through practical activities.

DT: We investigated a range of different pouches and bags, thinking carefully about their materials, design and purpose. We then began planning our own Roman pouch to sew.

Forest Friday: We enjoyed getting creative with nature! We made beautiful mandalas using natural materials, created pictures using sticks as photo frames and experimented with leaf printing.

We’ve also started working on our application for Eco-Schools, thinking about how we can make a positive difference to our environment.

What a fantastic week of learning, creativity, curiosity and outdoor exploration!

The latest Department for Education guidance is clear: attendance is not optional — and even small amounts of missed time can have a significant impact on learning, relationships, and confidence. Every day counts.

We know that occasional absence is unavoidable — and we're committed to working with families in a compassionate and understanding way. But we also want to improve our standards, because it's the consistency that allows children to thrive. Here are a few ways you can help:

Avoid term-time holidays – absence due to holidays is unlikely to be authorised.

Plan routine appointments for after school hours where possible.

Keep school informed if your child is unwell — and return them as soon as they’re ready.

Speak to us early if anxiety or other barriers are making attendance difficult — we’re here to help.

Together, we can continue to create an environment where children feel secure, successful, and supported — and that starts by being here.

Join Us for a Harvest Assembly at Tunley Church

We are thrilled to invite you to a special event that celebrates the spirit of giving and the bountiful harvest season - our Harvest Assembly! This heartwarming gathering will take place at Tunley Church on Thursday, 24th September at 9 am.

This assembly is a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together and share in the joy of the season. Here are some important details to note:

Children's Arrival:

Children are to meet directly at the church ready for the assembly. There is no need for them to come to school first, unless they are joining us for our breakfast club. The Church will be open from 08:45 and the assembly will begin at 09:00. Please ensure that you leave your child directly with a member of staff if you are uable to stay.

**Bringing the Harvest Spirit:**

Harvest is a time for giving, and as part of our tradition, we will be making donations to ‘The Brick” food bank in Wigan. If you wish to contribute, please bring your donations on the day of the assembly. Your generosity will make a significant difference in the lives of those in need in our community.

Early Reading and Maths – Reception Parents

Our Reading Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 30th September at 15:40. This is an opportunity for parents to find out how their child will learn early reading, writing and maths skills in school and how they can support this at home. We encourage a parent to attend for each child where possible.

A Warm Welcome to Joanne Urmston and Steven Baxendale

We are very fortunate this year to be able to welcome an additional teacher to Mossy Lea.

I am delighted to welcome Joanne Urmston to Mossy Lea. Joanne will be joining Oak Class on Wednesdays and Thursdays, working closely with me. I will remain Oak Class Teacher, continuing to oversee the class and plan the children's learning, while working closely with Joanne to ensure that learning, routines and expectations remain consistent throughout the week. I have no doubt that Joanne will quickly become a familiar and much-loved face in Oak Class.

We are also pleased to welcome Steven Baxendale to Mossy Lea. Steven will be volunteering in school as he works towards becoming a Teaching Assistant. He will be gaining valuable experience within the school environment while also becoming a familiar and supportive member of our school community.

We are really pleased to be able to strengthen our team in this way and are excited about the additional opportunities this will bring for our children. We know that strong relationships, consistency and familiar faces are incredibly important to our children, and we will continue to make these a priority.

🌿 Forest Friday & Eco-Schools Update 🐞

We are very excited to be restarting our Eco-Schools journey and continuing to look after and improve our school environment.

As part of our first Forest Friday activity, we are going to be making bug hotels to provide a safe and welcoming habitat for insects and other minibeasts around our school grounds.

We would love to invite parents and carers to come along and help us build our bug hotels on Friday 16^th October at 2pm.

Our reserve date, should the weather be unsuitable, will be Friday 23^rd October at 2pm.

Before we begin building our larger bug hotels, we will be making some mini bug hotels using plant pots.

If you are able to help, we would be very grateful for donations of medium-sized plastic plant pots for the children to use. 🪴

There are spaces available with Eccleston & Heskin's new U7s (school year Yr 2) football team, for girls and boys wanting to play football with a team. This is the first season of 3v3 football so the U7s will be playing on Saturday mornings with home games at Eccleston Rec and training currently 5.15 - 6.15 on Wednesdays (which may move to Tuesdays in the future).
